The discovery of the art of soap-making has been lost through the history of mankind. Traces of soap-making activity have been discovered in the age of the Sumerian people in the middle-east who had invented the first writing system. However, the time of discovery could not be specifically determined. A simple process of dripping animal fat into ashes before pouring in some water to extinguish the fire was the birth of the first soap.

In the past, soap was considered a medicinal product, which attracted heavy taxes in the 19th century. During the early 20th century, soaps were replaced by other synthetic cleaning agents including detergents. In fact, soap manufacturers have faced many challenges including fat shortages during the second World War, new technological developments and the reduction of manufacturing costs, all of which led to a move toward synthetic substances. Therefore, the flourishing traditional craftsmanship of the past has disappeared.

Today, it is believed that soap products in the market are mainly synthetic cleaning agents, called “soap” only by name. The recent demands for healthier, natural products have given birth to a new era of traditional soap manufacturing by master soap makers. These artisans joined together in search for traditional recipes to rekindle a century-old expertise that has been handed down from fathers to sons within cottage industries.

From now on, the natural soap that has widely accepted advantages is no longer inaccessible. Sharp eyes and proficient hands are needed to analyse the multitude of soaps in the market to distinguish between those of the master soap makers and those of the amateur. The alchemy of soap making is an art as well as a science.
Recent books on “instant soap” making in the market reveals none of the long established hidden secrets.
